Top 5 Health Benefits of Salmon!

In the search for eternal youth, many people are spending hundreds of pounds on expensive face creams. But what if there was a simple, cheap alternative? From taking care of your organs to nourishing your skin and hair, salmon is an everyday health hero. Put down that jar of gloop and read on for these Top 5 Health Benefits of Salmon!

1. Healthy heart
Long chain omega-3 DHA and EPA (Docosahexaenoic and Eicosapentaenoic) fatty acids found in oily fish like salmon are linked to heart health, as well as maintaining blood pressure within a healthy range. Farmed and tinned salmon is just as rich in omega-3s as wild and fresh which is good news for those who can’t always afford the more expensive forms.

2. Healthy brain
As well as keeping your heart healthy, DHA’s and EPA’s are also thought to support brain development and nerve function. Almost 60% of your brain is made up of fat, of which about half is DHAs. However, DHAs and EPAs are only found ready-made in salmon and other oily fish; omega-3 fats found in nuts and seeds, for example, need to be converted in the body to longer chains, a pretty inefficient process. The solution? Eat a portion twice a week.

3. Strong muscles
Salmon is a great source of protein, which is vital for healthy, strong muscles due to the amino acids that your body uses to maintain, grow and repair tissue. Animal-based single sources of protein are more ‘complete’ than most plant-based sources and therefore maximise your chances of getting all 9 of your ‘essential’ amino acids (those that your body can’t make on its own and therefore need to come from your diet). Check out this new salmon-based product based which is easily digested and high in all 9 essential amino acids

4. Better sleep
Serotonin aka the ‘feel-good hormone’ is responsible for increasing your melatonin levels which is the hormone responsible for helping you fall asleep. Salmon is rich in tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, so having a fillet as part of your evening meal may help you drift off. The Omega-3s in salmon can also help lower your adrenaline level, also contributing to a restful night’s sleep.

5. Strong, shiny hair and glowing skin
Salmon contains many important nutrients that can contribute to healthy hair and skin; such as selenium and vitamins B1, B3, B12, and E. Then there’s the fact that, as mentioned, it’s high in protein, the main component of hair and an important part of your skin.

Good nutrition is key to optimum health. It doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated; tinned salmon is a perfect example. If you already consume fish, regularly including this in your diet will set you on the right track to staying and feeling more youthful while also being a budget-friendly option. In most cases it’s probably more effective than any jar of face cream! Fan of fish? Tell which types work for you below or @KeepfitKingdom !
