5 Powerful Foods That Stop Disease!

In today’s busy world, we all have many important decisions to make. In this article, 5 Powerful Foods That Stop Disease, you’ll realise that by making small dietary choices on a daily basis, food can help protect your health. Next time you’re in the work canteen, choose an extra portion of veggies instead of a Yorkshire pudding and if you are going for a drink with a friend, order a smoothie instead of a milkshake. All of these small food choices (the results of which accumulate surprisingly quickly) will help protect you against disease. However, if you crave something not-too-detrimental once in a while, don’t fuss endlessly about it, just have it! there’s no harm in treating yourself. The following foods will fast-track you toward optimal health whilst fighting in your corner to aid disease prevention, so read on for these 5 Powerful Foods That Stop Disease!

1. Mackerel
This fish may be small, but it’s packed with vitamin D. 100g will provide you with over double your RDA (Recommended Daily Amount). Sunshine is the best source of vitamin D, and since Great Britain receives less than the ideal level of sunshine, oily fish such as Mackerel therefore form a vital part of the British diet. Vitamin D is necessary for your body to absorb calcium, which is needed for healthy bones, and without vitamin D the risk of developing osteoporosis increases. Once you lose bone mass, (especially when it’s age-related) it’s difficult, if not impossible, to regain. Even if osteoporosis isn’t something you worry about now, it’s still worth eating a mackerel or two. (Note: Not that we’re implying anything here, but could there possibly be new meaning to the phrase “holy mackerel”?)

2. Avocado
Next in our 5 Powerful Foods That Stop Disease list is the increasingly popular avocadoBesides its creamy texture and satisfying appearance, the avocado is your go to soldier in the battle against heart disease. they are high in potassium, helping lower your blood pressure and steady your heart rhythm. Avocados are recommended by the British Heart Foundation due to their high monounsaturated fat content. Known as ‘heart healthy’ fats, these help to lower ‘bad’ cholesterol and minimise the risk of heart disease.

3. Haddock
One of the highest dietary sources of iodine, this mineral is vital for the production of thyroid hormones, needed for many of your bodily processes including growth and metabolic regulation. Without enough iodine these processes become sluggish and inefficient making you vulnerable to thyroid disease. It’s not a bad excuse to head down to your local fish and chip shop but then again, the frozen version from your supermarket would be even better!

4. Spelt
This ancient whole grain has been grown for thousands of years. The bran and fibre in whole grains slows the digestion of their starch into blood glucose, causing less of a spike in blood sugar levels than refined grains. These properties make it easier to manage your blood sugars, especially important for the prevention and control of diabetes.

5. Walnuts
These are the #1 nut for your brain health, and it’s fitting since they even look like a brain! (How curious is that eh?) They contain an extremely high concentration of an Omega-3 fatty acid called DHA. DHA is capable of improving your motor development and memory pathways and has shown positive results in helping decrease cognitive decline and the risk and severity of dementia.
