Top 5 Health Benefits of Konjac!

The increasingly popular konjac plant is found in tropical parts of Eastern Asia and is an incredible zero-calorie soluble fibre source fit for all kinds of weight loss diets and meals.  Also known as Devils Tongue, Voodoo Lily or Snake Palm, read on for our Top 5 Health Benefits of Konjac!

1. Can help you shift excess weight
Konjac is widely known for its appetite-suppressing properties and is sold over the counter as the popular weight-loss supplement Glucomannan. It is low in calories but high in soluble fibre which, when consumed with water, absorbs fluids in the stomach and slows digestion to help you feel fuller for longer. Scientific research into the use of Glucomannan for weight loss have shown promising results in regards to promoting feelings of fullness and limiting energy intake (Keithley and Swanson, 2005).

2. It helps maintain normal cholesterol levels
We have two types of cholesterol in our body: low density lipoprotein (‘bad’ cholesterol) and high density lipoprotein (‘good’ cholesterol). Studies using konjac glucomannan have shown that it has the potential to reduce LDL by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol in the gut (Arvill and Boden, 1995). This could potentially help to reduce the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

3. Helps control blood sugar levels
Due to its high fibre content, konjac is great for regulating blood sugar levels. Consuming it alongside a meal will slow down the digestion and breakdown of food. This should help you to dodge the spike in blood sugar (and subsequent sugar crash!) that occurs after eating.

4. Promotes healthy digestion
Konjac is known to be highly effective for constipation relief. The soluble fibre results in bulkier stools and regular bowel movements, helping to relieve constipation. In addition to this, konjac is considered to be a natural probiotic so it also restores intestinal flora and helps keep your gut bacteria happy and healthy, (Chen, 2006).

5. Helps keep your skin smooth
Recent research into konjac and probiotics has also shown that it may have beneficial effects on your skin. It appears that it could help to stop the growth of skin bacteria associated with acne (Al-Ghazzewi and Tester, 2010). This is why you may have seen konjac sponges being sold in health stores- they’re growing in popularity in the beauty world. It’s soft, like jelly and helps to cleanse and clean your skin leaving it smooth and glowing!

You can find konjac glucomannan in many health and supplement stores, often combined with other herbal appetite suppressants. Give it a try and let us know how you get on below or @ Keep fit Kingdom !
