Gym Reopening: Pros & Cons of Going Back to the Gym!

When will gyms reopen? UK gyms are scheduled to reopen on 25th July. But should I or should I not go back to the gym? Like me, many gym-goers have been asking this question for the past three months. Gyms were closed overnight, and everyone was pretty much caught off guard, dangerous times demanding such drastic actions. The following months were brutal, but we held on to our fitness journeys one way or the other. Finally, the waiting game might just be over, the doors will reopen, and we can step back into our training zones. Will our lives go back to what they were pre-covid? We’ll see, in the meantime, read on for Gym Reopening: Pros & Cons of Going Back to the Gym!

I have desperately been waiting for the gym reopening announcement and now that it’s almost here, I’m not sure what to do. On the one hand, I am scared to take the risk, on the other hand, I am absolutely ecstatic as my fitness routine will have a chance to get back on track. This is a dilemma, WHAT SHOULD BE DONE? So, to find the answer to the question, I decided to make a list of all the pros and cons of revisiting the gym.

Pros:

  • Get fitness routines and goals back on track.
  • We will have a legitimate reason to leave our homes and meet other people.
  • Our mental and emotional health will improve (no matter what we think, this pandemic situation has affected our psychological wellbeing in some way or other).
  • Our eyes can take a break from online digital media and stay away from screens for a few hours.
  • This will be our reason to stop being lazy and start rebuilding our stamina.
  • Our diet and nutrition will have a chance to get refocused toward our fitness goals. Covid-19 has caused many to slip into a lethargic state of procrastinative complacency as well as to throw a lot of unnecessary ‘cheat days’ into our weekly meal plans.

Cons:

  • It will be difficult to maintain distance from other people.
  • It’s not possible to wipe every inch of a piece of equipment that you have touched or are going to touch.
  • Wearing masks while working out is impractical, uncomfortable and might not even be healthy as controlling your breathing is an important part of exercise.
  • Everybody sweats in the gym, it cannot be avoided, and it’s not possible to control your sweat or someone else’s.
  • Locker rooms and toilets are shared spaces, being cautious and sanitising everything is not at all realistic.
  • Not everyone is going to be as cautious as you are and follow all the rules. There are people acting right now, as though throwing caution to the wind!

At the end of the day, we need to keep ourselves and the people around us safe. Even though it’s not always possible, we should maintain a distance from others at the gym, wipe down equipment after using it and wear face masks (even if it’s uncomfortable). It’s understandable that gym staff are planning to take safety measures to keep us safe, and we do need to have patience and follow the rules and regulations that will be laid out.

Our safety is in our hands, if we want to go start getting back to some semblance of normality, we still have to exercise caution and use common sense given what we now know about the coronavirus.
