Green tea reduces bad cholesterol in the blood and improves the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. It is high in polyphenols which can aid in reducing inflammation and promotes healthy cell growth.

Green tea contains the amino acid L-theanine which works synergistically with its caffeine content to improve brain function. It is best to drink mid-morning for a metabolism boost, but can be enjoyed all throughout the day. It may be a good idea to avoid drinking it before bed to prevent the caffeine content affecting your sleep.

2. Oolong

Oolong tea is a partially oxidised tea, containing both green tea and black tea compounds, and aids weight management by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation.

Oolong tea contains L-theanine and GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) which is thought to improve sleep, and reduce sleep latency, making it easier to fall asleep giving you more hours of quality rest. It also produces an anti-hyperglycaemic effect by inhibiting the digestive enzyme α–amylase, which is responsible for high blood sugar levels.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint tea is a cross between watermint and spearmint and contains many essential oils such as menthol and limonene, which can help relax the digestive system and reduce bloating.

Peppermint tea also acts as a muscle relaxant which can reduce tension in the body, and decrease headaches. It is also caffeine-free, making it a great option for a relaxing drink before bed.

4. Hibiscus

Made from the tropical hibiscus flower, hibiscus tea is a refreshing herbal tea, consumed all over the world with many great health benefits. It is known to help lower blood pressure. Three servings of hibiscus tea per day has been found to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure by an average of 7.58mmHg and 3.53mmHg, respectively.

Hibiscus tea is also naturally high in vitamins, particularly vitamin C which helps support a healthy immune system.

5. Rooibos

Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine free with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which are great at calming allergies, and relieving skin irritation.

Rooibos tea may also improve the detoxifying functions of the kidneys, helping to remove excessive toxins from the body. The low caffeine content makes rooibos a great alternative to many other caffeine- containing teas, helping to keep anxiety and stress at bay.
