Oral Hygiene: 4 Things You Need to Understand

Brushing your teeth and looking after your oral hygiene is a regular thing every person is meant to do from a young age. It’s pretty self-explanatory really, but a lot of people have no idea just how important oral hygiene actually is, apart from the obvious! Even if you are pretty used to taking care of your teeth, you might be unaware of all the risks and concerns you might face if you stop taking care of them properly, or in a slipshod manner, so read on for Oral Hygiene: 4 Things You Need to Understand!

1. The Connection Between Oral Hygiene & General Health

Who actually enjoys going to the dentist and getting their teeth fixed? The answer is not a lot of people, but unfortunately, that’s now just a regular part of life. Depending on your habits and how well you take care of your teeth, but also due to genetics, you might have more problems than other people.

With that being said, keeping your dental hygiene health is extremely important not just because you want to keep your teeth in a good state, but because lots of other problems like diabetes and heart diseases, can be evidenced by the different kinds of bacteria that accumulate in your mouth.

It’s important to understand that brushing your teeth is important for preventing gum disease and decay, as well as other diseases that can spread from there to other parts of your body. Make sure you keep this in mind, there’s more to your mouth and body than you think!

2. A Good Wake Up Call

Once you realize that there’s more to oral health than having nice breath and no leftover food stuck in your teeth, you’ll be more willing to step up your oral hygiene game, instead of taking it o’ so lightly.

For example, the prevalence of oral health issues in adults living in California who experience serious dental issues, is cause for concern. As Concord dentists suggest to their patients, it’s better to spot the problem early and fix the mistakes sooner, rather than to leave it until later, or until the point where nothing can be done!

If you notice that you or your loved ones have been lacking in oral hygiene for whatever reason, small steps like flossing, brushing teeth after every meal is a good starting point to get you back on track, but also going for regular check-ups is also extremely important. When you realize that the stakes can run high, both for your health and for your wallet (or insurance), you’ll be more inclined to follow the rules and focus on keeping your teeth and gums nice and healthy.

3. The Mental Side of Oral Health

Sure, your health and wellbeing can be affected by not taking care of your oral hygiene, but at the same time, other things can be affected as well. If you totally let go of taking care of your teeth and gums, you might start to lose them one by one, which can be a huge blow to your mental health.

A lot of people suffer from low self-esteem, due to having any sort of body disfiguration, like loss of teeth – it can be extremely disheartening and hard to accept, especially if the person can’t get it replaced or fillings done. That’s why it’s important to do things early or at least don’t leave it late, to be consistent in your brushing, and persistent with your oral hygiene. If you notice a problem, always go to the dentist as soon as you notice it.

4. Other Consequences

Probably the worst factor, apart from health issues that come with bad oral hygiene, is the possible inability to use your teeth the same way. For instance, you might be unable to chew properly if you have poor, broken, or bad teeth. It can be extremely hard to live with that fact. On the other hand, smiling is important, people who smile more are generally better accepted in day-to-day situations, and it can be disheartening to never smile with your mouth wide open especially in a social setting.

Teeth and gums are, at the end of the day, functional and practical parts of your body. You need them in order to function properly, but at the same time they can also impact your day-to-day activities in society as well. All in all, keeping your oral hygiene is key in order to maintain your teeth and keep them intact so you don’t have to face these dire problems in the first place.

It’s all about being more aware of yourself, and looking at the bigger picture – the same goes with basic things like brushing your teeth, when you look at it from a healthier perspective, it can totally change your point of view on the subject. Being able to smile too is worth all the effort – as the reward for doing so is out of all proportion compared to not doing so – remember that! What do you do for your oral hygiene?
