What’s The Fuss About CBD Oil?

Society is assuredly moving towards being more health-conscious than ever as evidenced by the huge interest in natural health options. We are more concerned about the food we eat and any hormones or chemicals that may be present, hence the greater emphasis on ‘clean’ eating.  There is also a shift toward supplements using pure and natural ingredients to keep our bodies shipshape. Check out Consumer Advisors for more information about the various kinds of health supplements out there and what they can help you with. The bottom line is, most people want to be more aware of what’s entering their mouth including to treat various medical conditions. One such treatment, that’s created its fair share of controversy lately, is that of cannabis, medical marijuana and cannabidiol oil.

What is CBD oil?
The cannabis plant, also known as marijuana, consists of 80 chemicals known as cannabinoids. One of the chemicals is cannabidiol (CBD). It makes up 40% of cannabis extracts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that products containing CBD oil are not identified as dietary supplements since it’s a new drug still being studied and tested, although products labeled as dietary supplements may contain CBD oil.

Cannabis oil is used orally for anxiety, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, muscle disorders (dystonia), and is even being seriously tested and used in cancer cases where chemotherapy has failed. It can also be vaped to help quit smoking.

CBD oil is available in capsules, liposomal form, concentrates, injectable, tinctures and topical form. The product is also available as bottled oil that can be purchased at major retailers. A prescription nasal-spray that contains CBD oil and delta-9-THC can be obtained from pharmacies.

How Does It Work?
Since CBD oil has an antipsychotic effect, it prevents the breakdown of a chemical in the brain that affects mood, pain and mental function. By increasing the chemical’s level of blood and preventing its breakdown, CBD oil reduces psychotic symptoms associated with conditions such as schizophrenia. Besides reducing pain and anxiety, CBD oil blocks psychotic effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Uses:

Mental Health Issues
The most popular use is to gain relief from mental health issues or stress. CBD oil’s effects are similar to antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication. A study indicated that it can decrease anxiety in individuals suffering from social phobia and may produce clinical benefits for individuals who are experiencing early psychosis.

Helps people living with addiction
A neuroscientist at the Addiction Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine conducted experiments on individuals living with addiction. The neuroscientist concluded that CBD oil decreases heroin-seeking behavior. While it does not rehabilitate addicts, CBD oil can assist with craving resistance.

Assists sleep
Considering CBD oil can calm stress and anxiety, it helps with sleep. Experts have proven that fatigue is considered a side effect of the product. Experts stated that CBD oil can reduce insomnia in individuals suffering from chronic pain and increase overall sleep time.

Helps with pain and other medical conditions

A study conducted on rats with arthritis showed that application of CBD oil gel on rats’ joints reduced inflammation and overall pain. The study suggests that, used by people, it can similarly reduce their joint inflammation. Numerous users of CBD oil have stated that the product can alleviate side effects and pain arising from medical conditions, a claim that experts validate. The potential relief that the product can provide ranges from such conditions as chronic pain, and epilepsy seizures to cancer treatment.

Multiple Sclerosis
A prescription-only nasal spray product that contains CBD oil and delta-9-THC has proven to be effective for muscle tightness, urination frequency in individuals with MS and alleviating pain. At present, there is inconsistent evidence regarding its effectiveness for symptoms of multiple sclerosis. There is some research to suggest that spraying the oil under the tongue might help improve muscle tightness, but further research is needed in relation to treating bladder control, mobility or fatigue issues.

Side Effects

  • Some individuals have reported side effects of CBD oil such as: lightheadedness, low blood pressure, dry mouth and drowsiness.
  • Experts state that insufficient evidence exists to show that pregnant or nursing women can safely use the oil. To avoid any possible side effects, they should not it.
  • Research indicated that consuming high doses of CBD oil might make tremors and muscle movement worse in individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
  • Some individuals reported mild digestive upset such as diarrhea after consuming CBD oil.
  • It can inhibit the activity of some liver enzymes called cytochrome P450, which metabolises the majority of toxins and pharmaceutical-grade drugs used to treat humans.

Doses
Experts have stated that CBD oil appears safe when consumed orally by adults. A daily dose of up to 300mg has been used safely for 6 months. Daily of doses of 1200 to 1500mg were used safely for up to 4 weeks. Individuals who used the oil sprays under the tongue did so safely for 2 weeks in daily doses of 2.5 mg. The effect of the oil depends on the time elapsed after your last meal and the amount you ate. For you to experience the quickest potential immediate effect, it is best to consume it on an empty stomach.
