Trail Running: Why you should try it!

Trail runs are awesome. They’re like the video game “Temple Run” in real life! Except, you aren’t being chased by monkeys, and you’re not exploring ancient ruins (most of the time). But the point is that trail running is an awesome adventure. It takes agility, endurance, speed and so much more that the average Joe just doesn’t have. Read on for Trail Running: Why you should try it!

One thing I love about trail running is that it doesn’t start at the level of an adrenaline junkie who’s spent a year in with a tribe to find themselves. It can be done on easy terrain such as hillsides or even just the trails near you. You can build up your skills and move onto harder terrain and one day, you might be running through snow or the desert, doing flips, skips and stuff in between.

One thing that trail runners often say is an advantage, is if you’re a road runner or an endurance athlete already because the appropriate components of fitness are already there. Cardiovascular and muscular endurance? You got it. If you’re into racquet sports like tennis or badminton, or other fast-paced ball sports like football or basketball, you have agility and speed. If you’re into a combo of these sports, why aren’t you doing trail running already?

You won’t get hurt as easily as you think you will. It looks awful on the ankles, but it really isn’t that risky if you build up from easier terrains before tackling the harder ones. Your reactions will get quicker to different challenges. One thing I was anxious about was landing on uneven ground and twisting my ankle but when you’re in the moment, you just kind of know what to do – it’s like your natural instincts kick in and you just leap over those uneven spots.

It’s also a great way to connect with nature. If you follow some of the trail running vloggers or Instagram accounts, you’ll know that there are some beautiful sights that you’ll only see if you relish the idea of spending part of your weekend by running up a mountain at dawn.

We’re already past the half way mark of the year, and if you haven’t tried anything new, I’d definitely encourage you to do so. Haven’t got the time? Why don’t you replace one of your workout or rest days with this new trail trial? If you like it, be prepared to get yourself over to the nearest running shoe and equipment store for some trail shoes. Happy trailing!
