Top 5 Health Benefits of Shatavari!

You might not have heard of shatavari, or maybe you have but it got lost in the muddle of other supplements we’re told are ‘absolutely essential’ on a daily basis. But bear with us, because shatavari is a supplement worth considering, and we’re not just saying that because of its sassy name, whichtranslated from Sanskrit means, “she who has 100 lovers” – we’ll get to that in a moment. Shatavari is one of the most recognised herbs in the practice of ancient Ayurveda which, in a nutshell, is the psycho-physical health system developed thousands of years ago in India. It encompasses the prevention and diagnosis of just about every disease and ailment known to man, as well as their causes and treatment. Shatavari lives up to this, doing a stellar job at maintaining wellness in a myriad of ways, so read on for our Top 5 Health Benefits of Shatavari!

1. Reproductive health
Shatavari’s most noted claim to fame is its traditional use as a rejuvenating stimulator of the female reproductive system – hence its name (apparently, baby‐making was all the vogue back then). Shatavari is an all‐in‐one superheroine when you’re trying to conceive, as it controls estrogen production that regulates periods and stimulates the production of LH (luteinizing hormone), which is essential for triggering ovulation. (Note: Studies have shown that it should not be consumed during pregnancy.)

2. Fights fatigue
Those midday meeting yawns are almost impossible to avoid, even when you’ve had that dose of weird‐tasting green juice that promised to help. But shatavari is a real‐deal energy‐booster because it supports glucose transporters so that more glucose ends up in your cells and less remains in your blood. Basically: more glucose in your cells means more of it’s available as a source of energy

3. Helps ease PMS
If you’ve never experienced PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) and menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), imagine a construction site in your belly while also feeling ultra‐sensitive. The good news is, shatavari provides relief from irritability and cramps because it acts as an anti‐stress agent and a muscle relaxer for the uterus. Sign us up!

4. Relieves stress
Unless you can remain in an unperturbed superhuman Zen state of being, stress will affect you somehow. The thing is, oxidative stress – which happens to varying degrees when your body struggles to counteract the production of free radicals with antioxidants – is a reality of life. Shatavari helps increase antioxidant enzymes. It also supports the production of anti‐anxiety and anti‐depressant hormones, thus increases and encouraging calm and happy states.

5. Supports breast milk production
Remember shatavari being great for reproduction? It turns out this herb is great post‐birth stuff too, because it acts as a galactagogue (and no, that’s not an alien) simply put: shatavari helps to increase both the production and quality of breast milk in nursing mothers.

We’re sold on shatavari, and haven’t even covered its aphrodisiac effects (yet!). In terms of how you can take it, powder, capsule, or liquid form are all options, but powder is preferable so that the digestive processes can begin right away. In fact, we’re told it’s pretty yum this way in a glass of warm plant‐based milk with a sweetener, so we’re all for de-stressing over a shatavari latte!  Tried it, what results have you noticed?
