Top 5 Health Benefits of Bell Peppers!

These bright and juicy vegetables are full of all kinds of nutrients. Although they look among the most common items that you’ll find in the supermarket, they have many benefits and can be used in a range of recipes. Curious? Read on to discover the Top 5 Health Benefits of Bell Peppers!

1. Contains capsaicin
Red bell peppers are rich in capsaicin (a member of the B-vitamin complex family), an active chemical that helps reduce cholesterol and control diabetes. It also helps reduce the effects of arthritis in the joints, muscle discomfort after weight training and provide pain relief for soft bodily tissues.

2. Essential minerals
Bell peppers are full of the minerals we need to keep ourselves in robust health. They are rich in iron, copper, zinc and potassium; which are needed to maintain numerous systems of the body. For example, zinc is needed for a healthy immune system and the production of enzymes while copper is needed to support the growth and repair of muscle tissue and bone.

3. Low calorie
If you are trying to lose weight or lower your carb intake, bell peppers are brilliant for just that. While they are high in fibre, one bell pepper contains around just 33 calories. They are also quite filling while being low in carbohydrates, the content being about 8g per large pepper.

4. Helps keep skin healthy
See those ‘youthful skin’ creams on the shelves? If you want your skin to look bright and clear, bell peppers can help! They work as they possess vitamins A and C, containing about 213% of your RDA of vitamin C and around 101% of your RDA of vitamin A.

5. Aids sleep
Struggling to sleep at night after a long day? You may be running low on Vitamin B6. Bell peppers contain vitamin B6, which helps relax the nervous system and also regulate the neurotransmitter serotonin, helping you to drift off into a peaceful night’s slumber.

Bell peppers can usually be bought in multipacks of 3 and 6 from UK supermarkets, or straight from market stalls.
