Kratom for Pain Relief: What You Need to Know

The use of herbs and other natural remedies to treat pain dates back centuries. Today, people continue to explore plant-based options for relief from various types of pain, including chronic pain. One such option is Kratom.

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree from Southeast Asia and is native to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Kratom has been used in traditional medicine since at least the 19th century. Some people have recently used kratom as an herbal remedy for chronic pain and other conditions. But what should you be aware of before trying it? Find out in Kratom for Pain Relief: What You Need to Know!

How Does it Work?

The leaves of the kratom tree are traditionally crushed and made into tea. Kratom can also be chewed, smoked, or ingested in capsules. You can buy kratom powder, mix it with water, or make a paste or tea. The active ingredient in kratom is an alkaloid called mitragynine.

Mitragynine binds to receptors in the brain and spinal cord to produce pain-relieving effects similar to opioids. However, kratom doesn’t appear to carry the same risks as opioids. The effects of kratom begins at around 10 minutes after being taken orally, and 30 minutes after being taken by inhalation. The effects peak at around 1-2 hours and can last for up to 17 hours, depending on the dose.

Kratom produces stimulant effects at lower doses and sedative effects at higher doses. Kratom contains a variety of active alkaloids, including mitragynine and 7-α-hydroxy mitragynine (7-HMG). These alkaloids interact with mu-opioid receptors in the brain, producing stimulant and sedative effects and other effects on the nervous system.

Is it Effective?

Like any other herb or supplement, Kratom’s effectiveness depends on various factors. The effectiveness also depends on the dose and how you take it. There are several benefits of kratom that make it an effective herbal remedy. Some people report that taking kratom helps them manage pain and other conditions.

Others have found it helpful in managing withdrawal symptoms from opioids, while others report mood elevation. The FDA doesn’t regulate kratom, so there’s no official recommended dosage. However, doses between 2-6 grams seem to be the most common.

What Are the Risks?

As with any herbal remedy, there are potential risks and side effects associated with kratom use. These include addiction, dependence, and withdrawal, as well as a variety of other side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, seizures, and liver toxicity. Therefore, you must talk to your doctor before taking kratom or any other herb or supplement, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking any other medications.

When shopping for kratom, always buy from a reputable source to avoid adulterated or contaminated products. You can also check the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website for warnings about recalled kratom products.

To summarize, kratom is a tropical, evergreen tree from Southeast Asia that has been used in traditional medicine for many centuries. Some people have, in modern times, recently used kratom as an herbal remedy for major pain and other issues. However, limited scientific evidence supports its use, and it may also be associated with severe side effects. Therefore, talking to your doctor before taking kratom, or any other herb or supplement for pain relief, is essential.
