1. Brine

Have you ever found yourself at the end of a pickle or jalapeno jar and chucked that liquid down the drain? Stop and save it to add flavoursome flare to a drab salad! Mix with a range of oils which you can also reserve from jar products to diminish waste and make a bountiful, flavour-infused dressing.

2. Pasta Water

Save yourself the unwanted steam facial when chucking your pasta into the colander and spare 2 minutes to reserve some of that salty, starchy pasta water. Thousands of recipes from bread and pizza dough to soups and sauces call for salted water and you can simply skip that step by adding this to your dishes!

3. Bean Liquid

Here is a prime chance to double up uses of canned beans and the liquid within them. Bean liquid in most BPA, low sodium cans are a mixture of starch and salt-infused water. Nothing harmful there! It is a great addition to bean-based soups and cooking stocks as it acts not only as a thickener for sauces but also a flavour enhancer. Even more so, liquid from canned chickpeas can be used as a sweet dessert base.

4. Potato Peels

Chances are, if you’re chopping and peeling potatoes, you will be using the oven alongside it. So, save those skins, chuck some oil and seasoning of your choice on top and throw them into the oven for 10 minutes, and voila! You have a healthier potato crisp option with no food waste!

5. Citrus Zest

Nothing is more frustrating than when a recipe calls for using the teeniest bit of grated zest or lemon juice and then having the whole thing left over. Once you are done, there are endless possibilities on how to reuse citrus skins and juice that include citrus infused butters, ice cubes, candied zests and even as cleaning aids.
