Before starting to clean a sofa, you need to look at the product tag of your sofa to get an idea of its material and the preferred technique to clean it. You will usually find 4 groups of letters and here is what they mean below:

  • W: Okay to clean with water
  • S: Not okay to clean with water; a solvent-based cleaner must be used
  • WS: Either of the above two methods (water or solvent-based cleaner) is okay
  • X: Neither of the above mentioned two methods is okay; only vacuuming can be used

After checking the label on the sofa, you may proceed to either of the three below-mentioned processes to clean a sofa based on its material and nature.

1. Cleaning a Fabric Sofa

First of all, you need to loosen all the hardened stain material on the sofa. Brush the sofa, especially the affected areas, for this purpose.

  • Sprinkle all of the sofas with baking soda and let them sit for at least 30 minutes. After that, remove the baking soda by vacuuming the sofa.
  • Next, you need to make a simple sofa cleaner. Mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and 1 tablespoon of water. Then add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to it.
  • Spray the liquid solution on the sofa stains and give it a rub with a cloth to help remove them. Now let the sofa dry.

2. Cleaning a Microfiber Sofa

  • Spray rubbing alcohol to your sofa, section by section and clean it with a light-coloured or colourless sponge, so that no colours transfer to the sofa.
  • For water stains, you can follow the same procedure with water.
  • Remember to check the sofa’s care tag before using either alcohol or water to clean it.

3. Cleaning a Leather Sofa

  • Firstly, vacuum the whole sofa and then wipe it down with a dry, and clean microfiber cloth.
  • Mix an equal amount of water and white vinegar in a container to make a cleaning solution.
  • Apply this solution to the sofa by dipping a cloth in it and rubbing it on the sofa.
  • Dry the sofa using a microfiber cloth.
