Garbanzo Dry Roasted Chickpeas

‘Stay Fuller for Longer’ is Garbanzo’s motto because chickpeas do exactly that and are much better for you than most other snacks like chocolate bars and biscuits that can leave you feeling hungry. Garbanzo Dry Roasted Chickpeas are a great source of protein and fibre, and these snack packs can be enjoyed any time of day and even on the go!

Gluten free, they come in several flavours including Thai Sweet Chilli, Sesame Seeds & Honey, Smoked Hickory and even Coffee Coated which we review here. The new snack packs have less than 150 calories per pack and are perfect to take with you to work or keep in your handbag just in case you get peckish.

Nutrition: Gluten free, low calorie, good source of fibre, good source of protein and suitable for vegetarians.

Taste:

Thai Sweet Chilli – Reminds me of quality coated nuts because of the crunchiness and the exotic blend of flavours. The flavour is pleasantly long lasting with a slight heat and sweet edge which instantly reminds me of Thai cuisine.

(Ingredients: Chickpeas 97%, Rapeseed Oil 1%, Rosemary Extract (deodorised) 1%. Seasonings: Sugar, tomato powder, salt, cayenne, chilli, white pepper, ginger, fennel, paprika, parsley, garlic powder, dried bell pepper, yeast extract powder, onion powder, Natural Colour: paprika, citric acid, paprika granules, anti-caking agent.)

Sesame Seeds & Honey – The chickpeas are covered in sesame seeds and there is also a cinnamon-like taste which kicks in first which is then followed by the taste of the honey which comes through after you’ve chewed the chickpeas for a few seconds! This one reminds me of a sugar-coated cereal, you feel like you could literally eat them as cereal with milk.

(Ingredients: Roasted Chick Peas 68%, Honey 12%, Sugar 9%, Sesame Seed 8%. Natural Vanilla, Caramel Food Colouring, Gum Arabic.)

Smoked Hickory – The smoky flavour lingers for a short while on your tongue while the taste of the chickpeas themselves is quite prevalent. There is a BBQ sauce-like taste so it makes a great savoury snack.

(Ingredients: Chickpeas 97%, Rapeseed Oil 1%. Yeast Extract Powder, Buttermilk Powder, Sugar, Rice Flour, Salt, Citric Acid, Natural Flavouring. Smoke Flavouring, Natural Colour Paprika, Spice (Pimento.)

Coffee Coated – As soon as I opened the packet the waft of a wonderful coffee aroma came pouring out, delighting my nostrils. Biting into the crunchy chickpeas was as delightful as the smell, as a slight taste of chocolate followed the coffee on my taste buds. The taste of the actual chickpea itself doesn’t come through at all, which is a good thing as I forgot I was eating something healthy. You’d be forgiven for thinking these were just coffee sweets!

(Ingredients: Roasted Chick Peas 44%, Cocoa Mass 23%, Sugar 19%, Cocoa Butter 9%, (1% to 5%) Coffee Flavour, Milk Powder, Natural Vanilla, Lecithin, Gum  Arabic, Titanium Oxide, Tumeric, Caramel.)

Value: At 99p for a 30g snack pack these are great value. It might appear to be cheaper to buy a box of cereal bars but these chickpeas are so much better for you so are worth the few extra pennies.

Summary: We were pleasantly surprised at the huge range of ways to make chickpeas so tasty. For the more health conscious, these easy to carry, convenient-sized packs are part of the new wave of snacking options right now and definitely a step in the right direction.
