Excess Mucus: What to Feed Your Child to Reduce It

The cold weather is still lingering on! Make sure you don’t allow viruses or bacteria to affect you too much, let alone your growing, and developing kids. They can easily get really congested with that mucky mucus! When you do notice sniffling, sneezing or shivering going on, get a hold of the right foods to decongest those nasal passages ASAP.

A good first suggestion is French onion soup or any vegetable soup. Chickpea soup comes highly recommended and just looks particularly scrumptious. Kids, can be notoriously difficult and fussy eaters at times, let alone children who habitually feel under the weather!

Do make sure your kids drink plenty of fluids, and use ingredients from the lists below that they favour whether sweet or savoury. As a parent, you’ll no doubt know how much your child loves to indulge their favorite foods!

What to Drink to Reduce Mucus

Pomegranate juice, and elderberry juice are great decongestants, and typically, children love sipping down on them!

You can also try a smoothie with a mix from among the following fruits: Lemons, limes, grapefruit, pineapple, oranges, kiwi, papaya, mango, amla, watermelon, or berries (elderberries, strawberry, blueberries, cranberries, etc). Blended up blueberry juice also thickens up nicely and naturally.

Any teas made with fresh fruit are also great, as well as herbal teas.

What to Eat

A nice, homely soup or a good broth, like chicken soup or the infamous bone broth. Luckily there are also vegan options, of course! Carrot and apple soup also comes highly recommended.
You could also cook up something with: cauliflower, beetroot, celery, cabbage, turnips, bell peppers, green peas, and onions.

Herbs and Spices

Herbs and spices also help reduce mucus – herbs like: thyme, peppermint, ceylon cinnamon, cardamom, chamomile, cayenne pepper, black pepper, horseradish, garlic, parsley, watercress, and turmeric.
