5 Top Foods for Glowing Skin!

We talk about health often, but did you know that the largest organ of your body, your skin, can weigh around 10kg? It’s important to understand how you can optimise your skin’s health. We should have more sources of vitamin C in our diet every day as it is water soluble and cannot be stored in the body. If you are spending half your pay cheque on expensive creams and potions and not seeing the benefits, opt for skin-friendly foods and take care of your skin from the inside out. Make sure your meals include as many naturally skin-healthy ingredients as possible -with that in mind, here are 5 Top Foods For Glowing Skin!

1. Avocado
Rich in vitamins A, D and E avocados are one of those foods that almost ‘do everything’ it contains good fats and is good for skin hydration as it gets into the basal (deepest) layer of cells in the skin, eating avocados everyday can do wonders for your skin complexion . It has antioxidant carotenoids like alpha-Carotene, beta- Carotene , Beta-cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein. These free radical quenching compounds provide significant protection for your skin from environmental damage. Avocados also help moisturize and soften your skin.

2. Dark chocolate
Packed with potent antioxidants and containing various essential nutrients which help you stay healthy and beautiful, don’t be afraid to consume dark chocolate as it’s a skin friendly food which helps to keep your skin glowing and flawless. Cocoa is rich in fiber and protein which is satisfying news I’m sure to your sense of taste as well as to your skin! It also protects your skin from drying out, sunburn and boosts blood circulation in healthy skin. Ensure you’re eating chocolate over 70% cocoa that doesn’t contain any eczema triggers or high amounts of sugar. A good average is to try and keep to around 20g of sugar per (100g) chocolate bar.

3. Salmon
If you’re a fish eater, you could consume this up to three times a week. An average ounce fillet of cooked Atlantic salmon contains 23g of protein and 6g of fat most of which is the healthier unsaturated fat, it’s also high in vitamins D , B6 and B13 and is good source of magnesium, niacin, Omega-3 fatty acids and selenium. Of note, wild caught salmon may help provide more supple, glowing skin due to its exceptional levels of Omega-3s.

4. Spa water
You can make your own ‘spa water’ with any kind of fruit which helps your skin to glow (albeit not ‘in the dark’ necessarily!) Here is a recipe that has helped my skin to glow; cucumber with lemon and mint leaves. Mix 12 cups of filtered cold water with 1 sliced medium organic cucumber, 2-3 Amal organic lemons and 10-12 organic mint leaves. Drink this every morning and you will start to notice the effects after just 2 weeks; a reminder that natural beauty comes from what you put into your body.

5. Blueberries
These definitely increase circulation to help your skin glow. The colour of blueberries is the result of compounds called anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants packed with vitamin C. One cup of blueberries with plain yogurt in your breakfast will do miracles to your skin. You can also use frozen blueberries and make your own indulgent smoothies with other fruits like bananas and strawberries, and/or with yogurt, orange juice and/or ice cream, sky’s the limit!

So there you have it, 5 top foods for glowing skin -these can also be applied directly on the skin as natural ingredients of themselves; for example, blueberries and avocados as natural face masks, spa water as a toner, dark chocolate as a skin-smoothing face mask, and salmon fish oil as a facial serum.
