3 Ways to Break Out of a Workout Plateau

Your workouts produced great results, but now you’ve hit a wall and aren’t progressing. Don’t give up. Try these tips for breaking out of a workout plateau!

When your body adjusts to your workouts, and you no longer see gains, you’ve reached a workout plateau. Whether you’ve been working out to lose weight, tone your muscles, bulk up, or for another goal, not progressing can demotivate you. Try these 3 Ways to Break Out of a Workout Plateau!

1. Vary Your Workout Routine

Since your body has adjusted to your workout, changing the way you exercise can help you find a new challenge to help you hit your targets. And changing your routine will make working out more exciting for you, too.

You can step out of your comfort zone by using completely different training techniques or by using familiar equipment in different ways. For example, if you use stall bars to increase your flexibility and strength, consider alternative ways you can use stall bars at home. Using stall bars for Pilates helps you make the most of your equipment, and gives you a new way to train.

2. Recover Between Workouts

Another way to break out of a workout plateau is to make sure you get ample recovery between workouts. During a rest day, the microscopic tears in your muscles heal. Fibroblast cells repair the tissue, giving you stronger muscles.

Recovery also prevents muscle fatigue and reduces the risk of injury. Use post-workout recovery tools, such as foam rollers, to increase circulation and decrease soreness.

3. Adjust the Frequency or Intensity of Your Training

Adjusting the frequency of your exercise or the intensity of your workouts can help you overcome the plateau. If you strength train, you might train more often, do more reps, or reduce your rest interval. For cardio workouts, consider incorporating plyometric exercises to boost your endurance.

If you’re not sure what adjustments you should make, or if you want to make the most impactful change to your workout, consider hiring a personal trainer. When choosing a trainer, consider their experience to find the best match for your fitness needs.
