Top 5 Health Benefits of Kombucha!

Kombucha has been renowned as the ‘elixir of life’ due to it’s flowering number of health benefits. This currently very trendy health tonic is readily available to buy in health stores, and has even been spotted in Waitrose supermarkets. It is a fermented tea drink, made up of black or green tea, cane sugar, and a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast). The SCOBY facilitates the fermentation process and consumes the majority of the sugar, resulting in a nutrient dense and low sugar beverage; intrigued? Discover more in our Top 5 Health Benefits of Kombucha!

1. Detoxification
An overactive liver and gut is detrimental to body detoxification and prime health. Kombucha contains large amounts of Glucaric acid, which aids in liver detoxification and elimination. Glucaric acid is also known to fight inflammatory diseases such as cancer. Kombucha also provides the gut with good bacteria, which supports digestion and allows your body to absorb the nutrients you need more quickly, resulting in higher energy levels with far less caffeine involved than a cup of coffee.

2. Candida prevention
Candida is a vicious overpopulation of yeast dormant in the gut, resulting in an unbalanced gut flora. Many of us may not realise we have Candida, but some of the symptoms involve constant fatigue, undesirable digestion, bowel movements, headaches and in some cases skin problems. Kombucha can help heal Candida by redeeming balance in the gut through live probiotic cultures. These live probiotic cultures enable the good bacteria to repopulate whilst drowning out the unpleasant Candida yeast…yes please!

3. Improves mental state
It has been strongly suggested that Kombucha can help reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety because of its boast-worthy levels of B vitamins (especially B12), and its gut repairing functionality. Depression can be a symptom of ‘leaky gut syndrome’, which as mentioned above, Kombucha can help to heal. Vitamin B12 is also known to increase energy levels and support an overall more positive mental wellbeing.

4. Weight loss
There is a strong interconnection between gut bacteria, obesity and weight loss. By keeping our gut flora in check, we are able to efficiently digest food, absorb nutrients and maintain a healthy metabolism, all of which aid weight loss. It is suggested that the more noticeable results come from drinking the Kombucha 15 – 30 minutes before your meal, presumably because the Kombucha has a chance to work its magic on your digestive system before the food enters your body.

5. Boosts joint health
Kombucha contains glucosamine which enhances synovial hyaluronic acid production. It’s the hyaluronic acid that enhances preservation of cartilage structure and reduces the pain caused by arthritis. It is interesting to note that over 50% of regular Kombucha consumers have noticed an improvement in their arthritis related symptoms.

Convinced yet? Health stores and supermarkets sell this health tonic in a variety of delightful, palatable and fruitful flavours such as ginger and lime, or raspberry and elderflower.
