Top 5 Health Benefits of Ginseng!

A common ingredient in many energy drinks both natural and perhaps those less so, this herbal plant has been used to alleviate many ailments and provide energy and focus. There are 11 different varieties in the ‘Panax genus’ with American and Asian being the most popular. Though it should be noted that some with the name ginseng (i.e. Siberian ginseng) do not have the same health properties, so check to make sure which one you are using. Read on to discover more about the Top 5 Health Benefits of Ginseng!

1. Energy booster
One study showed that the polysaccharides present in ginseng help to combat fatigue. Whilst another study isolated the chemical ginsenoside and found this too had anti-fatigue properties. Mice supplied with varying levels of ginseng found that it increased activity endurance and decreased levels of lactate, both of which will help you to reach your next PB!

2. Protects your heart
Studies have shown that ginsenoside has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasorelaxation (reduced pressure on blood vessels) properties that can really benefit your ticker. It has been shown to restore blood flow levels to normal in those who have cardiovascular disorders. American ginseng has been shown to reduce a person’s risk of developing atherosclerosis (clogging of arteries) too.

3. Reduces stress
This herb can increase energy by stimulating the nervous system but it can also help to relax it giving you a more focused frame of mind. Whilst more scientific research is needed to further prove this, swapping your morning cup of regular Joe for a ginseng tea (like the one in the video below) will put you in a better mindset to face the day.

4. Helps to regulate blood sugar levels
Red ginseng given to obese, aged mice provided them with an increased insulin sensitivity and other studies have shown that ginseng helps to lower blood sugar levels. This not only helps to manage Type 2 diabetes but also prevent it developing in pre-diabetic individuals. Even for those with no blood sugar level issues, it can regulate your blood sugar levels, keeping energy sustained for longer and prevent sugar cravings throughout the day.

5. Helps fight cancer
Several studies conducted have shown that ginseng can help to fight off many different types of cancer from breast cancer to lung cancer to prostate cancer and many others. It does this by inhibiting further growth of cancerous cells and by activating a cancer-fighting gene.
