Mahtay – Sparking Yerba Mate Infused Tea

Water is doubtless the most important fluid with 60% of your body being composed of it. Water enables vital chemical reactions, digestion, getting nutrients into cells, toxin removal and regulation of body temperature. Having said that, tea continues to be one of the most commonly consumed beverages, and with this vegan-friendly, all-natural South American yerba mate variety called ‘Mahtay’ piquing a new wave of interest, we decided to find out what it was all about, read on below for our review!

Fortunately, tea also has many beneficial properties. It contains flavonoids and antioxidants which help to protect the body’s cells from damage and also boost heart health. Moreover, it contains caffeine which acts as a stimulant to keep you alert and can also improve performance, suppress pain and help release fats for energy- fantastic if you’re trying to transform your physique and lose those last few inches around your abdomen, thighs and waist.

For the most part, tea is served warm making it ideal for cold winter mornings, but it can also be drunk cold. This is where Mahtay’s Sparkling Yerba Mate Infused Tea steps in. It’s a distinctive-tasting drink that’s 100% natural, helps to boost your metabolism and can be taken on-the-go for those early morning commutes, or whenever you’re in need of a rejuvenating, refreshing break.

Ingredients: Sparkling water with strong infusion from Roasted Yerba Mate (82%), Coconut Water Concentrate (5%), Agave Syrup, Citric Acid, Natural Flavouring including Caffeine, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate), Acai Extract.

Nutrition: A standard bottle contains 300ml and contains only 45 calories! However, it is also high in natural caffeine (90mg) which is roughly equivalent to 2 cups of tea; excellent for giving you a pre workout boost or to awaken and quicken your senses to tackle your daily tasks. Moreover, whilst it does contain sugar (3.6g per 100ml), these sugars are all naturally occurring and therefore keeps you on track with your diet and help you to avoid nasty refined sugars.

In terms of ingredients, yerba mate is flooded with various antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It contains potassium and sodium to enhance muscle and nerve function and control fluid balance within the body and also contains manganese which contributes to normal bone growth. It also contains phosphorus which regulates the body’s pH balance, improves the brain’s cognitive functions and aids in detoxification of the body. In addition the sweetener used is agave syrup which is has a low glycaemic index meaning it releases sugar slowly into the bloodstream helping to keep energy levels stable and allay the temptation to scour the chocolate cupboard in between meals! Finally, it contains coconut water to help keep you hydrated and acai berry extract which is high in the antioxidant anthocyanin; helping to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and combat heart disease.

Bottle design: The transparent, rich sky-blue coloured bottle whilst simple and fairly small in size (300ml) has a nice, ergonomic shape. A regular branded bottle is circular from the bottom to top and smooth on the edges, here instead are small, wavy lines and indentations on the sides which made the bottle easier to hold allowing my fingers to mould themselves around this little container of metabolism-boosting liquid.

Taste and smell: As I unscrewed the bottle top and brought the cylinder top to my bottom lip, a light, fresh, citrus sweet smell graced my nasal cavity which immediately stimulated my senses. As I took a swig of the mellow green liquid, it gently fizzled on my tongue to the back of my throat. The roasted taste of yerba mate lent a natural smoky-nutty flavour, but the agave nectar and acai tasted slightly like honey adding a delightful sweetness. Even though the drink is predominantly dominated by yerba mate, it still supplies a surprise cocktail of sweetness and creamy coconut giving the palate and brain an adventurous-trip as though to an exotic South American beach sunset.

Value: These little caffeine pick-me-ups are priced at £1.99 per bottle, but consumers do have the option to purchase either a box of 6 (£11.94), 12 (£23.88), or a case of 20 (£39.80). Seeing as the average shop-bought cuppa is roughly £1.80+, here for a few extra pennies you can grab yourself a uniquely tasty drink with 2-3 times the amount of ‘kick’ and plenty of antioxidants. Whilst a Coca Cola or Pepsi might be cheaper, they also contain a lot more additives, E numbers and chemicals and therefore I believe the Sparkling Yerba Mate Infused Tea is reasonably priced for its nutritional value.

Summary: I myself am not normally the ‘championer of caffeine’ but if I were to choose a caffeinated product, I would certainly choose this. I prefer this one chilled and (like a honey bee) I’m a sucker for sweet aromas and flavours so found it easy on the tongue. After consuming half a bottle of the lightly fluorescent green liquid, I certainly felt more awake and energised and enjoyed the fruity, roasted taste to match. Up for something different like you’ve never tried before? Then we highly recommend this – it’ll make your tastebuds whirl!
