Dulse ‘Bacon’ Seaweed

When we first got the lowdown on what’s been found under the sea we all thought we had sand in our ears but it’s true! The latest bacon replacement is a strain of seaweed called Dulse that according to scientists at Oregon State University has double the nutritional value of kale, is overflowing with protein and tastes like the guilty breakfast pleasure of many, bacon -let’s take a deeper look into this intriguing Dulse ‘Bacon’ Seaweed!

As a vegan this is like a dream come true, yes vegans are allowed to admit that they once enjoyed the flavour of bacon rashers! Of course it’s not just for vegan and veggies though. Bacon is well known for not only its indulgent taste but its high saturated fat content, high cholesterol levels and links to numerous health problems are all good enough reasons to switch to the seaweed version.

Dulse grows wild along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines and has before now been used as a dried cooking ingredient for centuries, but the guys at OSU say that they have finally developed it so it can be farmed and eaten fresh. The healthy facon looks like a translucent leafy red cabbage and is fried in the same way you would normally prep your regular rashers, that’s what gives it that desirable porky palette.

Researcher Chris Langdon of OSU explains that given the right conditions he could grow this particular strain of bacon flavoured seaweed at a speedy rate of 45 Kilograms per week! That’s not the best bit though, they are already creating so many different products from this power food: salad dressings, veggie burgers and I have even read that beer could be getting a dollop of Dulse!

So where do we get this ‘superfood’ from? Well – it’s hard to track down at the minute, but I think it’s going to come in waves and flood the shops soon enough. For the time being though, I found a few places online by simply typing in the words “Dulse Bacon”, Healthy Supplies came up too.

So what are you waiting for? Give it a go and be sure to Tweet us and let us know your thoughts on this bacon tasting ocean vegetable @keepfitkingdom We will be making sure we get our hands on it and tucking in so keep your eyes peeled for a review!
