Magnesium: Products by Better You

Magnesium supplementation has become increasingly popular amongst athletes and gym- goers over the last couple of years. As the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body, magnesium plays a role in over 300 chemical reactions within you. Scientific research shows that it has a seemingly endless list of benefits with joint health, brain function and energy production serving as prime examples. In this review we tried a few of BetterYou’s magnesium supplements assess if they are useful in athletic performance, recovery after training, and even…sleep…read on to find out more!

Company background & ethos:
British company BetterYou has an abundance of knowledge about this vital mineral. The magnesium chloride used in their products is mined in the Netherlands and is completely free from man-made pollutants. Magnesium is most effectively absorbed through your skin and BetterYou’s magnesium products are all transdermal for superior absorption. As supporters of ethical lifestyles and choices, the staff at Keep Fit Kingdom were very pleased to see that their products are never tested on animals.

In this review we test five of their main magnesium products: ‘Original spray, ‘Recovery spray, ‘Joint spray, gel and flakes. (Note: we have also had direct feedback regarding the use of their ‘Lavender Essential Oils’ spray) on RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome) and can confirm it being markedly effective in reducing symptoms.

Ingredients/active properties:

Original Spray: Contains concentrated solution of Zechstein Inside magnesium chloride hexahydrate. 10 sprays deliver at least 200mg of magnesium.

Recovery Spray: Contains concentrated solution of Zechstein Inside magnesium chloride hexahydrate, grape seed oil, essential oils (black pepper, camphor and lemon). 10 sprays guarantees a minimum of 180mg of magnesium.

Joint Spray: Contains water, Concentrated solution of Zechstein Inside magnesium chloride hexahydrate, glucosamine sulphate 2KCl (from fish and crustaceans), menthol flavouring natural and wintergreen essential oil. 10 sprays deliver approximately 105mg of glucosamine.

Pure Mineral Gel: Concentrated solution of Zechstein Inside magnesium chloride hexahydrate (30% concentration) and hydroxypropyl starch phosphate (a gelling agent) are the main ingredients in the gel. 1ml provides 100mg of magnesium.

Body Soak: Pure Zechstein Inside, Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate flakes.

Note: Due to the added essential oils, the Recovery spray and Joint sprays are not recommended for children under 12 or pregnant women. All the products are suitable for vegans and vegetarians with the exception of the Joint spray.

Consistency/texture and fragrance: All the sprays have a similar consistency and they’re easy to apply and massage into the desired area. Thankfully, the magnesium doesn’t cling or stick to your clothes after applying it. There is little, if any, fragrance from the original spray, gel and flakes. The joint spray carries a very subtle menthol fragrance and the Recovery spray has a slight lemony aroma.

Performance: The sprays were really nice to use. I tested them under several conditions, for example, before workouts, after showering and throughout the workday. I felt an increase in confidence and my body felt invigorated each time I used them. The Original spray seemed to ease stiffness and tightness in my shoulders and lower back. These small lightweight sprays easily fit in your bag and this making it very easy to use them almost anywhere.

I particularly favoured the Recovery spray. I’m convinced that I had far less muscle soreness while using this and I definitely had improved training performances. One of the benefits of using this spray is that testosterone levels will be elevated which is great news for anyone seeking more muscle and strength. Used during training, it brings a very welcome cooling sensation. As magnesium is depleted through sweating, it is logical to use the spray during training to rapidly replace these losses.

The magnesium gel was pleasant to use. The guidelines recommend using a pea-sized amount whenever needed. I used this liberally and frequently and the tube seemed to last for ages. Although it can be used during exercise, it is advised that you apply the gel onto clean skin for maximum absorption. It absorbs fairly quickly and well and there is no leftover residue. Its worth noting that you cannot overdose on transdermal magnesium therefore it is fine to apply it as frequently as needed.

The magnesium flakes are, in my opinion, the star of the five items. Having a hot bath in the evening, with the flakes added proved to be a very soothing and relaxing experience. I slept solidly after each time I used them and woke up with my body feeling ten years younger. I can see why the flakes won the title of Best Sleep Brand at the Mumii Awards 2017.

Value: It won’t cost you much to try out any of these products and the prices won’t cut into your budget too much considering how much they can benefit you and your family including budding athletes! All the sprays are priced at £12.20 for a handy-sized 100ml bottle. The gel is priced at £11.95 for a 150ml tube, an excellent price considering how long it lasts. The flakes retail at £3.95 for the 250g bag size which was tested in our review. For those who enjoy regular hot baths, larger bag sizes up to 5kg can also be purchased.

Summary:

The magnesium products performed well above my expectations. The items are professionally presented, have clear usage guidelines and provide sufficient information about magnesium on the packaging. It is reassuring to see that some of the products are approved by the highly respected Informed Sport programme. Additionally, the products have earned numerous awards (detailed on their website) which to my mind reinforces the company’s high standards. These products didn’t fail to impress and I’m definitely going to purchase more.
